I will need to assess you to ensure that you are suitable for osteopathic treatment. This involves taking a case history from you to find out what’s been troubling you and how, it also involves ruling out any underlying illness that an osteopath cannot help with or that may require further investigation.
I will then test your body in different ways to try and establish the cause of your discomfort and use it to formulate an appropriate treatment plan.
I will use a mixture of techniques to treat you depending on the diagnosis and on your wishes in relation to treatment. It usually involves a combination of manipulations, soft tissue massage, mobilisations, and other ways of treating your joints and muscles and ensuring a healthy blood and nerve supply to the affected areas. Medical acupuncture may be used if you are comfortable with needles.
Sometimes there will be a swift improvement and sometimes a patient will need time, a number of treatments, maybe even a change to their lifestyle in order to fully restore health.
I will always try and explain to you my diagnosis and treatment plan and your prognosis, as well as your role in your recovery.
You should also be a participant in your treatment so please ask questions, tell me if there are any techniques you want me to avoid and of course, tell me if there is anything you are not happy with.
