Those with Parkinson’s disease primarily have problems controlling voluntary movements. They lack motor control that allows them to perform the movements freely, swiftly and without tremor. Now it seems that, for whatever reason, having direction from a teacher and maybe by developing a muscle memory of dance sequences, seems to help give temporary respite.
Capturing Grace, is a film portaying the work of the Mark Morris Dance Center (MMDG) in Brooklyn. Dance for Parkinson’s Disease is a project that started in 2001 when Olie Westheimer, director of the Brooklyn Parkinson Group (BPG), approached Morris about the possibility of the centre leading a programme of serious, rigorous, dance classes for members of her group.
This is no cure but there is something about the structure and the rhythm that seems to allow and escape from the usual difficulties with movement. Have a look at the work being undertaken.
